In the summer of 2000, a group of Lake Oconee residents organized to protect the lake from increasing threats of overdevelopment and unwise use of natural resources.
A country club on the lake attempted to withdraw 14 million gallons of water a day from the lake to irrigate a new golf course and to supply an artificial waterfall. The request was made in the midst of a severe drought and was buried within the files of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The water withdrawal request would have been granted unopposed were it not for an accidental discovery. Save Lake Oconee's Waters (SLOW) was formed in response and has been fighting this request ever since.
Our mission: SLOW is dedicated to preserving the unique and valuable natural resources of Lake Oconee. We are fighting for the creation of a regional water authority so that water rights can be granted responsibly and justly.
